Gury has dedicated many years of working with unhoused persons, advocacy and program direction for the care and safety of unhoused persons in Philadelphia.
He has also assisted the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia as an educator for Mural Arts Youth Programs and as an advisor and critic for murals in progress.
Dedicated to helping PAWS, the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, Gury has also fostered thousands of kittens and cats. Gury specialized in sick animals, providing nursing care until they are healthy enough for adoption. In 2015, Gury was named PAWS's first "Volunteer of the Year", and the organization formally rededicated its kitten maternity ward in his name.
Gury founded the After School Studio Arts Program at PAFA as a free art education program for Philadelphia-area high school students. As a safe after school space, the After-School Studio Arts Program provides high school students with opportunities for enrichment, skill development, and portfolio building with AL and his full time students as their teachers. Students in the School District of Philadelphia have priority access to registration. The program celebrated its 30th anniversary in January 2024.
Gury has guided community-based programming and outreach for the unhoused, as well as participating in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts program of “Lost Dreams on Canvas”, painting portraits of victims of gun violence in Philadelphia.
He has worked with the Mural Arts Program in Philadelphia, both as a teacher of Philadelphia's youth and as a guide for mural artists.
Al created a painting of "Alice of Dunk's Ferry" for Philadelphia's historic Christ Church in 2009.
"Alice had no last name," Al told the Episcopal News Service. "I thought that she should at least have a face by which we could remember her."
The daughter of slaves and the church's longest-lived parishioner, Alice spent her 116-year life gathering stories about the city and its people, and became known in her time as an oral historian. But unlike the founding fathers, there was no likeness of her.
After years of field trips to the church with his painting students, Al decided it was important to rectify that situation, and in 2009 he provided the church with his vision of what such a proud Philadelphian might have looked like.
